Be the change you want to see
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve; an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also, a white has no superiority over black nor does a black have any superiority over a white except by piety and good action.” Prophet Mohammed (PBUH)
Despite this clear statement from our Beloved Prophet, we are still living in a world of discrimination! In the South Asian and Arab cultures, our complexion and race are given unnecessary importance. So much so that when a baby is born, the first question asked is “Is the baby fair?” This is disgusting, before enquiring about the health and well-being of the newborn and the mum we are more worried about the skin colour of the baby. Similarly, when our children come to a marriageable age and choose a righteous partner from a race disliked by us, we oppose the alliance and put up a fight.
We need to stop and recognise we are a part of the problem. Being people of colour, we still discriminate amongst ourselves! This needs to change! It will change only if we change ourselves and our future generation!
So Today,
- Read about the stories and struggles of the black people who are victims of discrimination.
- Talk to your children about race specific generalisations and how we need to stop it!
- Tell your children to love themselves and others for who they are and not for the colour of their skin!
- Provide yourself and your children diversity of culture by reading books from cultures around the world.
- Make friends from different cultures and love and respect all of them.
Fight racism in your hearts, your homes, your families and your circles. Nothing will change unless we change!
So,
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD!
And Remember
Allah says in the Quran [ 49:13]:
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
