Unlock The Power Of Adhkar

‘Adhkar’ is the plural of ‘Dhikr’ which means Remembrance. There are many pieces of evidence in the Quran and Sunnah which encourage us to increase the remembrance of Allah (SWT). Our Messenger (PBUH) said: “The similitude of the one that remembers Allah and the one that doesn’t is like that of the living and the dead.”[Bukhari] Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) repeated some supplications every morning and evening, the collection of these supplications is called the Daily Adhkar. These Adhkar have numerous benefits, my top three picks are:

  1. Closeness to Allah: Abu Huraira(RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious said: “I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My heart, and if he remembers Me in assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.”
    [Sahih Muslim]
The first step towards gaining closeness to Allah is by remembering Him, isn’t that beautiful? What is more amazing is that when we make an effort, Allah Himself draws closer to us.
  2. Peace and Tranquility: Allah(SWT) says, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. Quran (13:28)
When we remember Allah, clouds of worry and fear are driven away, and the mountains that make up our problems seem like molehills our apprehensions are replaced with peace and contentment! Now, who does not want to fill their lives with peace and baraka?
  3. Protection: Ibn al-Qayyim said, “The morning and evening adhkar play the role of a shield; the thicker it is the more its owner will not be affected. Rather, its strength can reach to such an extent that the arrow shot at it will bounce back to affect the one who shot it.”
SubhanAllah, just by sparing a few minutes from our busy lives, to remember Allah, gives us the protection from all harm in this Duniya and the next! Now that’s got to be a win-win deal! Agree?

Allah the Exalted says “Believers, remember Allah a great deal, and glorify Him morning and evening” Quran (33:41-42).
The best time to supplicate, the Morning Adhkar is between Fajr and sunrise and the Evening Adhkar is between Asr and Sunset. Sometimes we might miss these times and feel like we can’t read the supplications at all, so let’s try and fit them in our lives. Maybe on the way to work in the morning and on our way back from work in the evening, or, supplicate whilst putting baby down for a morning nap and whilst preparing dinner for the family in the evening!
